Ridge Shingle Replacement in Cedarburg
Challenge
Even though the typical lifespan of a roof can be up to 30 years, harsh weather conditions can speed that process up. In this case, there were old, decaying shingles, and even some fiberglass was showing on the edges of some shingles. If your shingle roof has a shine to it when hit by direct sunlight, it is likely the fiberglass backing is showing on the shingles. When the fiberglass backing begins to shine, it means a shingle is reaching the end of its life.
Solution
The owner of this home just wanted a simple ridge shingle replacement, so that’s what we did!
If the owner would have liked to solve future problems with wind-blown shingle problems as well as his ridge shingles, here’s what we would have done:
Used the IKO RoofGard Synthetic Underlay because it’s extremely flexible- even in cold weather so it won’t crack, peel or delaminate.
The rubberized asphalt layer in IKO GoldShield Premium Ice & Water Protector seals around roofing nails, resisting leakage caused by water backup behind ice dams, or from wind-driven rain. If your roof had troubles keeping up with harsh winds, this product would be essential.
IKO Dynasty performance architectural shingles would have been used to repair this roof for several reasons. IKR embeds copper-coated granules into their Dynasty shingles to help inhibit the growth of blue-green algae that can cause unattractive black stains, streaks, and discoloration. These shingles also have IKO FastLock™ sealant strips along their bottom edge, which help prevent wind-driven rain from getting underneath the shingles. When activated by the sun’s heat, the strips get extra-tacky and create a strong bond to help ensure maximum protection against wind uplift, blow-off, and water penetration.
